CLASSES AND CURRICULUM
The Elkhart Community Schools is organized on the 6-2-4 plan. This means that a student has six years of training in elementary school, two in middle school, and four in senior high school. A kindergarten program before the first grade is also available. In addition to Elkhart Memorial and Elkhart Central High Schools, ECS offers high school age students the ElkhartAreaCareerCenter for study in technical and vocational fields. In the summer, Summer School allows regular high school students to earn extra credits or make up failed subjects.
The curriculum at Elkhart Memorial is comprehensive, enabling students to take college preparation, vocational, and/or technical preparation programs. The various departments are Language Arts, Social Studies, World Languages, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Family and Consumer Science, Industrial Technology, Business, Art, and Music. Each semester is eighteen weeks long. There are seven 50-minute periods in a school day. The school day lasts from 7:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m., with three 30-minute lunch periods. Students enrolling at the Elkhart Area Career Center attend there for three hours a day for a year (or, for some subjects, two years) and attend regular high school classes the other half-day; Cosmetology is a four-hour course.
