Elkhart and the surrounding area is a business and industrial community composed of a widely diversified base situated in north central Indiana about three miles from the Michigan state line and about 100 miles east of Chicago on the Indiana Toll Road. The Elkhart Community School’s district population is approximately 60,000. Industry includes mobile homes and recreational vehicles, electronics, health care, band instruments, and a variety of small businesses. Elkhart is also a railroad center. Area colleges and universities include IU Elkhart, IU South Bend, IVY Tech, Indiana Tech, Goshen College, Bethel College, Holy Cross, Vincennes University, and Notre Dame.
 
Elkhart Memorial High School is one of two four year comprehensive high schools operated by the Elkhart Community Schools. The approximate student enrollment of 1700 is predominately middle class and is served by 115 faculty members, 60 percent of who have advanced degrees. The academic calendar consists of two semesters, 90 days each semester, seven class periods every day, 50 minutes in each class. Memorial High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
