Classes and Curriculum

The Elkhart Community Schools is organized on the 6-2-4 plan.  This means that a student has six years of training in elementary school, two in middle school, and four in senior high school.  A kindergarten program before the first grade is also available.  In addition to Elkhart Memorial High School and Elkhart Central High Schools, ECS offers high school age students the Elkhart Area Career Center for study in technical and vocational fields.  In the summers, Summer School allows regular high school students to earn extra credits or make up failed subjects.

The curriculum at Elkhart Memorial is comprehensive, enabling students to take college preparation, vocational, and/or technical preparation programs.  The various departments are Language Arts, Social Studies, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Home Economics, Industrial Technology, Business, Art, and Music.  Each semester is eighteen weeks long.  Starting in the 2010-2011 school year, there will be seven 50-minute periods in a school day.  The school day lasts from 7:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m., with three 40-minute lunch periods.  Students enrolled at the Elkhart Area Career Center attend there for three hours a day for a year (or for some subjects, two years) and attend regular high school classes the other half-day; Cosmetology is a four hour course.
